Impressions from Guimarães & Uncover Festival

Hello, from the sofa with the cat on my lap, forcing me to sit funnily sideways to still be able to type these lines — but no complaints, she is the best.

In this newsletter, I am sharing some impressions from the charming Portuguese city of Guimarães and from joining Uncover Festival there.

Guimarães

This was one of the rare cases in my life when I looked up images of a place before traveling there, and it didn’t look particularly cute or architecturally interesting, but upon arriving and exploring the city in the morning light, I was amazed by what “the birthplace of Portugal” truly has to offer.

Uncover Festival

The reason I was in Guimarães was Uncover Festival: four days of masterclasses, talks, concerts, workshops, exhibitions, performances and initiatives.

For me, some highlights were:
Artivist Dread Scott in an interview about the power of art in politics, activism and challenging historical narratives. Which was both impressive and motivating.

Neil Harbisson who talked about being a cyborg, hearing colors via the antenna implanted in his skull, transpecies rights, and future possibilities of senses humans don’t have (yet). This was interesting in so many ways.

Another highlight was Gisela Mabel’s piano performance — impossible to put into words. So please listen and watch for yourself.

I had the honor of speaking alongside these and many more amazing artists.
In my live interview (led by Karla Pequenino) we talked about self-portraiture and its potentialities to shape identity.

Thank you for sticking around. As always: Let me know what you would like to read and see in my newsletter. I mean it, YOU who reads this right now, let me know 🙂 (Simply reply to this email.)
